Freestyle Digital Media, the distribution arm of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has released The Nation on North American VOD platforms. The Native American-themed comedy mockumentary brings a sharp, satirical lens to questions of sovereignty, identity, and bureaucratic absurdity.

The film follows Chief Chucky Ribbonleg of the Deep Lake First Nation, who makes the audacious decision to declare his community a fully independent nation, rejecting Canadian government authority entirely. A documentary crew records the bureaucratic chaos that unfolds, capturing the comedic fallout as the community attempts to establish its own border controls, law enforcement, and financial systems.

Conway Kootenay stars as Chief Chucky, delivering what director Aaron James describes as “comic genius.” The ensemble cast includes Brett Mooswa, Mia Dixon, Kelly Orr, and Kristen Minoose, with James himself appearing on screen alongside his directing duties.

“The film is funny, touching and smart,” James said. “It’ll make you laugh and ask questions at the same time.”

The mockumentary format has proven consistently effective for political and social satire, from Best in Show to What We Do in the Shadows. By applying that template to Indigenous sovereignty questions, The Nation tackles serious subject matter through humor, making complex political ideas accessible to broader audiences.

James wrote and directed the film, producing alongside Mariah Janvier, Mia Dixon, and James Blackman. The production represents the kind of culturally specific storytelling that distribution platforms are increasingly seeking as they diversify their content libraries.

Available now on digital HD, cable, DVD, and satellite platforms, The Nation arrives at a moment when conversations about Indigenous rights and representation in media are more prominent than ever. For audiences looking for comedy with substance, this mockumentary offers both laughs and food for thought.
